When having a Radiology, Cardiology, G.I. procedure or Surgery at Placentia-Linda Hospital, it is important that you follow instructions from your physician regarding preparation for your test.
For your assistance, below are common tests performed at Placentia-Linda Hospital, listed by department, with instructions and questions you may be asked. Be sure to contact your referring physician and the Hospital department to verify these are the correct instructions for your particular case.

CT SCANS:
CT Scan - Abdomen Without IV Contrast:
- Please pick up oral contrast prep from the Radiology Department and drink the prep one-hour prior to the scheduled procedure time.
- Time required is approximately 30 minutes.
CT Scan – Abdomen With IV Contrast:
- Due to the IV contrast injection, you may not have any food or drink three (3) hours prior to the exam.
- Pick up one bottle of oral contrast from the Radiology Department and drink it one hour prior to the appointment time.
- Time required is approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
Questions:
- Do you have allergies to iodine (shellfish, seafood, etc.)?
- Are you a diabetic? If so, are you taking medications? “Metformin” (Glucophage)? If so, you must be off the medication forty-eight (48) hours prior to the administration of contrast media. A blood test will need to be obtained prior to the exam.
CT Scan – Brain:
- If the scan is with contrast, you may not have any food or drink four (4) hours prior to the exam.
Questions:
- Do you have allergies to iodine (shellfish, seafood, etc.)?
- Are you a diabetic? If so, are you taking medications? “Metformin” (Glucophage)? If so, you must be off the medication forty-eight (48) hours prior to the administration of contrast media. A blood test will need to be obtained prior to the exam.
CT Scan – Chest or Soft Tissue of the Neck:
- Intravenous contrast agent is used. You may not have any food or drink four (4) hours prior to the exam.
Questions:
- Do you have allergies to iodine (shellfish, seafood, etc.)?
- Are you a diabetic? If so, are you taking medications? “Metformin” (Glucophage)? If so, you must be off the medication forty-eight (48) hours prior to the administration of contrast media. A blood test will need to be obtained prior to the exam.
CT Scan - Pelvis Without IV Contrast:
- Please pick up two bottles of oral contrast prep from the Radiology Department and drink one bottle two hours prior to the appointment and the second bottle one hour prior to the scheduled procedure time.
- Time required is approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
CT Scan – Pelvis With IV Contrast:
- Due to the IV contrast injection, you may not have any food or drink three (3) hours prior to the exam.
- Pick up two bottles of oral contrast from the Radiology Department and drink one bottle two hours prior to and one bottle one hour prior to the examination.
- Time required is approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
Questions:
- Do you have allergies to iodine (shellfish, seafood, etc.)?
- Are you a diabetic? If so, are you taking medications? “Metformin” (Glucophage)? If so, you must be off the medication forty-eight (48) hours prior to the administration of contrast media. A blood test will need to be obtained prior to the exam.
CT Scan – Urogram (to rule out renal stone):
- NO prep is necessary. NO contrast is given.
MAMMOGRAPHY:
Mammogram:
- Please wash all deodorant and/or powder off the breast and underarms prior to your exam.
- If your previous films are not available the day of your exam, the reading of your mammogram will be delayed.
Questions:
- Is this a routine annual exam or do you have a current problem?
- Have you had previous mammograms here or another location? If so, please pick up those images and bring them with you the day of the exam.
- Do you have implants?
ULTRASOUND:
Ultrasound – Abdomen
- Nothing to eat or drink at least three (3) hours prior to the procedure. Preferrably no food or drink after midnight the day prior to the procedure.
- Time required is approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
Ultrasound - Pelvic
- Drink three (3) 16-ounce glasses of water one hour prior to the exam time.
- You must have a full bladder.
- Time required is approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
Ultrasound - Renal
- Please drink two (2) 16-ounce glasses of water one hour prior to the scheduled exam time.
- You may void at anytime. We want to hydrate the kidney which gives better visualization under ultrasound.
MRI
MRI / MRA Procedures:
- You may eat.
- Time required is approximately 45 minutes.
Questions:
- Do you have a metal prosthesis, pin or implants?
- Do you have an aneurysm clip(s)?
- Are you claustrophobic?
- Do you have a pacemaker or valve replacement?
- Have you worked as a sheet metal worker or welder?
- Do you have cochlear implants or hearing aides?
- Are you pregnant?
- Have you had a vena cava filter placed in the last 6 weeks?
- Do you have a Thermal Dilution Swan Ganz Catheter?
- What is your weight?
Other Procedures / Nuclear Medicine Tests: Barium Enema (Lower GI Series):
- You must take the required laxative preparation (consult your physician) the day prior to the scheduled procedure.
- You must not have any food or drink after midnight prior to the scheduled procedure time.
- Time required is approximately 30 minutes.
Biopsy Procedures:
- You must have a blood test with results prior to the procedure.
- Your physician will need to provide a short History & Physical of your medical history.
- Please check in two (2) hours prior to the scheduled procedure time.
- After the procedure, you will be observed for approximately four (4) hours. You will need to have someone drive you home.
Hysterogram:
- This test may be scheduled between eight (8) and ten (10) days after the onset of your period, preferably on the tenth (10) day.
- You will want someone to drive you home due to the possibility of cramping after the completion of the procedure.
Esophagram:
- NO prep is required. You will be required to drink barium to evaluate the esophagus at your appointment time.
Nuclear Medicine Exams:
- NO prep is required. You will be given a very small dose of radioactive material intravenously which allows visualization of the requested region of interest.
- In some cases, you may need to return once the injection and/or thyroid pill is given. The Nuclear Technologist will give you instructions.
- For bone scans and thyroid scans you will receive the isotope and be required to return a number of hours later in the day for the scan.
*All children’s preparations will depend on their age. Please check with the Radiology Department and your physician for instructions.
G.I. Center
- For procedures in the G.I. Center, please consult with your referring Gastroenterologist as preparation can vary case by case.
- You must do a bowel cleanse (for colonoscopy) and please no food or drink after midnight prior to your procedure.
- You will need to have someone drive you home.
