Preparing for your Procedure
Your doctor will provide you with instructions in advance that will outline what you should and should not do in preparation for your procedure. Please carefully read and follow these instructions.
Preparing for a Colonoscopy
For a colonoscopy, it is important that you have done the colon cleanse. To obtain full benefits of the exam, the colon must be clean and free of stool. The preparation involves drinking a solution which flushes the colon clean or taking laxatives and enemas. Usually the patient drinks only clear liquids and eats no food for the day before the exam. The physician advises the patient regarding the use of regular medications during that time. Please contact your physician if you experience any difficulty with the colon preparation.
There are various methods used for preparation, and your doctor will recommend what he or she prefers in your specific case. Check your instructions about what to eat or drink the night before your colonoscopy and when to stop eating. Consult your doctor prior to the procedure to determine if the medications you are on should be taken or not prior to the colonoscopy.
