Colonoscopy / Sigmoidoscopy - Lower G.I.

What is a Sigmoidoscopy?

A sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows the physician to examine the lower one-third of the large intestine.  Sigmoidoscopy is helpful in identifying the causes of diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, abnormal growths and bleeding.  It may also be used to obtain biopsies and to perform procedures such as removal of polyps or hemorrhoids.  Sigmoidoscopy can also be used to screen for colorectal cancer.

  • A short, flexible, lighted tube, called a sigmoidoscope, is inserted into the intestine through the rectum into the lower part of the large intestine.  Air is injected into the intestine through the sigmoidoscope to inflate it for better viewing.

What is a Colonoscopy?

The colonoscopy allows the doctor to see the entire length of the large intestine.  The procedure also allows the doctor to remove polyps that may be found or conduct a biopsy of any pathology that may be discovered.  The procedure is normally done with the patient under sedation.

 Reasons for the Exam

There are many types of problems that can occur in the colon.  Medical history, physical exam, family history, tests and X-rays can help diagnose a problem.  A colonoscopy is usually the best exam because the physician can view directly inside the colon.

Colonoscopy can be used for:

  • Colon cancer
  • Polyps
  • Colitis (Ulcerative)
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis
  • Bleeding Lesions
  • Abdominal symptoms, such as pain or discomfort – particularly if associated with weight loss or anemia
  • Chronic diarrhea, constipation or change in bowel habits
  • Anemia
