Bariatric Services Overview

Adjustable Gastric Banding System

  • The adjustable gastric banding system places an adjustable band around the upper part of the stomach. The result is you take in less food.

Gastric Bypass

  • Gastric bypass involves surgically reducing the size of the stomach to approximately the size of a golf ball.  The small stomach pouch helps you eat fewer calories, resulting in weight loss.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

  • The Sleeve Gastrectomy operation (also known as Gastric Sleeve) involves surgically narrowing the stomach to the width of a garden hose.  The decreased stomach volume will help you to eat fewer calories and lose weight.  This is a fairly new procedure that has been done as a standalone over the last five years.

Who Should be Considered for Bariatric Surgery ?

Your first step in achieving your weight loss goal is to have your physician complete a broad assessment to determine your readiness.  Many people experience great success following medical and surgical weight loss methods.  Depending on your current health and future goals, you could become a success story yourself through surgery.

To be accepted for weight loss surgery, you should meet certain criteria.

In general, you should:

·          be between the ages of 18 and 65 years old

·          have a BMI of 40 or more OR a BMI of 35 or more with co-morbidities

·          have tried unsuccessfully to lose weight through various weight loss programs

·          be willing and able to commit to long-term medical follow-up, as well as the lifelong changes in eating, exercise and lifestyle habits that will be necessary to maintain your weight loss and health goals after surgery.

Will My Insurance Cover Bariatric Surgery?

Many insurance plans cover all or part of the cost of weight loss surgery. Coverage is determined by your individual policy.  Many managed care plans have benefits that cover the costs for patients. Because insurance plans and benefits can vary, we recommend that you discuss the costs with your company health benefits coordinator and your physician.  Simply call the phone number on the back of your insurance card and ask if the particular weight loss procedure you seek is covered under your individual policy.

Facts on Obesity

What Does it Mean to be Morbidly Obese?

Obesity is becoming a big concern in the United States:

·          66.3% of adults age 20 years and over are overweight or obese

·          32% of adults age 20 years and over are obese

·          17% of adolescents age 12-19 years are overweight

·          19% of children age 6-11 are overweight

·          300,000 deaths each year in the United States are associated with obesity

This rate of obesity raises concern because of its implications for the health of Americans. Obesity increases the risk of many diseases and health conditions. These include–

  • Coronary heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
  • Stroke
  • Liver and Gallbladder disease
  • Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
  • Osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint)
  • Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility)

CAUSES OF OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY

  • Overweight and obesity result from an imbalance involving excessive calorie consumption and/or inadequate physical activity.
  • For each individual, body weight is the result of a combination of genetic, metabolic, behavioral, environmental, cultural, and socioeconomic influences.
  • Behavioral and environmental factors are large contributors to overweight and obesity and provide the greatest opportunity for actions and interventions designed for prevention and treatment.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND INACTIVITY

  • It is recommended that Americans accumulate at least 30 minutes (adults) or 60 minutes (children) of moderate physical activity most days of the week. More may be needed to prevent weight gain, to lose weight, or to maintain weight loss.
  • Less than 1/3 of adults engage in the recommended amounts of physical activity.
  • Many people live sedentary lives; in fact, 40% of adults in the United States do not participate in any leisure time physical activity.
  • 43% of adolescents watch more than 2 hours of television each day.
  • Physical activity is important in preventing and treating overweight and obesity and is extremely helpful in maintaining weight loss, especially when combined with healthy eating.
