How Do You Assess Heart Health?

Our cardiologists review our patients’ medical history, conduct physical exams and may request a series of heart tests to assess and diagnose heart conditions properly. Here are some of the heart health assessments that may be performed:

  • 4-Hour Holter Monitors – a device for checking heart activities for extended periods
  • 30-Day Event Recorders – a device you can tap to record your heart activity whenever you feel symptoms
  • Arterial Vascular Study Lower Extremity – for checking blood flow in your lower extremity arteries
  • Echocardiogram (EEG) – track and record brain wave patterns through electrodes attached to you
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) – for recording the heart’s electrical activity
  • Exercise Stress Test – for monitoring heart activity while you run or walk on a treadmill with heart-monitoring equipment attached to you
  • Dobutamine Stress Test with Echocardiography Imaging or Nuclear Imaging – uses dobutamine medication to artificially increase your heartbeat for echocardiography or nuclear imaging
  • Lexiscan Stress Test – obstruction in your coronary arteries is identified by using Lexiscan to dilate these arteries
  • Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) – uses sound waves to get detailed photos of your heart and arteries

How Can I Improve My Heart Health?

A study by the University of California, San Francisco, can confirm that a healthy lifestyle and diet are your best weapons against cardiovascular diseases. The study focused on people who had suffered a heart attack and then changed their lifestyles to include regular exercise, a low-fat diet, less stress, no smoking and more social connections. Most of the participants were able to lower their cholesterol levels and blood pressure, lower blood sugar levels and reverse some of their arterial blockages.

Here are some heart health tips that can help you live healthier and decrease your risk for cardiovascular diseases:

  1. Opt for at least two servings of omega-3-rich fish per week, such as trout, salmon and herring.
  2. Get at least five servings of vegetables and fruits every day.
  3. Beans, barley, prunes and oats are some soluble fiber choices you should add to your diet.
  4. Replace rice, white bread and noodles with whole grain cereals and bread.
  5. Choose lean cuts of pork, beef or skinless chicken breast.
  6. Add healthy oils and fats to your diet, such as canola oil, avocados, olive oil, nuts and foods that have natural oils.
  7. Cut out foods high in saturated fats, such as:
    • Full-fat whole milk and other dairies
    • High-fat meat cuts
    • Trans fat is found in baked goods, margarine, fried fast foods and crackers
  8. Drink plenty of fluids such as water, no-sugar juice and low-fat milk.
  9. Limit sodium intake to up to 1,500 mg per day.
